RISEN, the 5-part prompt framework

Most prompts fail for the same reason.

You ask the way you'd ask a person who already knows the context, and the AI doesn't. RISEN is a simple five-part structure that forces the context out of your head and onto the page, where the model can actually use it.

Role: who the AI should be
Instructions: what you actually want done
Steps: how to approach it
End goal: what "done" looks like
Narrowing: the constraints
Write your request under each one.

A vague wish gets a vague answer.

Fill in each part of RISEN and you hand any AI model a clean, structured brief instead. Half the value is paid out before the AI ever sees the prompt, in the thinking the framework makes you do.

The five parts

The five parts of RISEN, explained in plain English, with a weak-prompt to strong-prompt example you can copy today.

The beginner path

How to start using RISEN with nothing but a notepad and five headers.

The advanced path

How to graduate RISEN from a manual habit into something your tools do for you automatically.

A custom GPT

A link to my custom GPT that turns any rough prompt into a polished RISEN prompt. Answer two questions and it's done.

Five parts, every prompt.

  1. Role

Who the AI should be for this task. Sets the frame and the vocabulary.

  2. Instructions

What you actually want done. The core request, stated plainly.

  3. Steps

How to approach it, broken into a sequence the model can follow.

  4. End goal

What "done" looks like, so it can aim instead of wander.

  5. Narrowing

The constraints. What to avoid, what's out of scope, format, length.

Then graduate it into a system.

You do it by hand until the shape is instinct. Then you stop doing it by hand and build it into your tools, so it happens whether or not you're thinking about it.

  1. Manual

A separate thread that converts your prompt into RISEN.

  2. Packaged

A custom GPT that takes any prompt, asks two questions, returns RISEN.

  3. Callable

An MCP tool that generates a RISEN prompt on the fly.

  4. Protocol

A cross-AI tool, so each model gets enough context to contribute at quality.

  5. Ambient

A skill that reads whatever context the thread already has and generates the RISEN prompt from it.

  6. Infrastructure

A build system where each step produces the next RISEN handoff.

The ambient stage ships in ForgeOps: the RISEN prompt builder is one of its 8 skills.

With RISEN

  • A clean, structured brief.
  • Context the model can actually use.
  • You know what you're asking for before you send it.

Without it

  • A vague wish.
  • The context stays in your head.
  • "Help me write this."

Why RISEN

It's a baseline for every project I create.

RISEN started as a framework where I saw much better responses from LLMs. When I knew an LLM was low on context, I always knew a RISEN prompt would give it enough to start moving me in the right direction. As I grew I created systems that would read the context from the thread I was in and generate a RISEN prompt on the fly. My days of coming up with RISEN prompts in my head are long gone. They live on through my agentic systems.

Questions before you start.

Is it really free?

Yes. Download it, try it on your next real task, and feel the difference.

Do I need any tools?

No. You need a notepad and the five headers. Write your request under each one before you send anything. The friction is the point. It's doing your thinking for you.

What does RISEN stand for?

Role, Instructions, Steps, End Goal and Narrowing (focus or exclusions).

What does the custom GPT do?

Put in the prompt you'd like upgraded to a RISEN prompt, answer 2 questions, and it'll generate a RISEN prompt for you.

Where's the RISEN prompt builder skill?

It's one of the 8 skills in ForgeOps. It builds a self-contained RISEN prompt from your current context, one that runs in any blank thread or outside LLM with zero prior context.

Turn "help me write this" into a prompt that delivers.

Keep losing your project between chats? The AI Project Continuity Kit fixes that. Want your agent to run the whole loop? See ForgeOps.
